Karnan is a Partner with Kennedys Legal Solutions and heads the firm’s Sanctions and Compliance Practice Group based in Singapore.

He specialises in shipping and international trade law and is qualified in both Singapore and England and Wales. He speaks and reads Malay/Bahasa Indonesia and has extensive practical experience handling matters involving jurisdictions across South and South-East Asia including Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar, India and Bangladesh.

Karnan and his team focus on assisting clients in the shipping, trade and insurance sectors with trade sanctions compliance and related regulatory issues. His clients include vessel owners, charterers, trading houses, offshore energy contractors, P&I Clubs and marine insurers. In addition, Karnan also advises clients on a range of other shipping and trade-related matters including those involving charterparties, commodity sale contracts, marine insurance, shipping-related derivatives contracts and shipping-related fraud.

He has been consistently ranked as a leading individual by Chambers Global and clients describe him as someone who is noted for his ‘excellent understanding of the shipping industry and the complexities of doing business across the region,’ while The Legal 500 has identified him as providing ‘clear and measured responses in difficult situations and under tight deadlines’.

Recent representative work includes:

  • Reviewing and auditing existing sanctions and Anti-Money Laundering compliance procedures for a multinational reinsurer with substantial operations in China, Singapore and Malaysia.
  • Reviewing transactions carried out by a Singapore-based trading company following investigations by their bank in relation to alleged sales/transactions involving a Chinese entity suspected of having links with the North Korean government and assisting the company during the investigations.
  • Representing and advising a leading marine insurance brokerage in relation to potential breaches of sanctions regulations when dealing with the collection of payments and premiums involving Iranian shipowners.
