Roger Matthews

Roger is a partner in Dentons’ London office. He is a member of the International Trade, EU Regulatory, Brexit and Government Affairs practice groups.

Roger advises on international trade matters. He focuses in particular on international sanctions, export controls, customs/import controls and the commercial aspects of international trade. His practice ranges from advisory, strategic, contractual and compliance advice, through engaging with regulators, to investigations and contentions advice. He also advises on the trade implications of Brexit including how clients, both in the UK and abroad, can best prepare for it. His clients include businesses involved in international trade across all sectors, financial services institutions and government bodies.

In addition to many years in private practice, Roger has previously served in the HM Treasury sanctions section, as a national expert on sanctions and certain trade policies at the European Commission, and at the Bank of England/PRA. He therefore brings valuable insights to his advice on Brexit preparations and government engagement, as well as real expertise on sanctions and international trade matters.

Roger is a sanctions expert on the Law Society’s Money Laundering Task Force, and writes regularly on trade and sanctions matters. He is recommended by Who’s Who Legal 2019 (Trade & Customs – International Sanctions).
