Beijing sanctions US lawmaker for remarks that ‘interfere in China’s internal affairs’

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced ‘countermeasures’ against US Congressman Jim McGovern, saying the Massachusetts Democrat ‘frequently made remarks and actions that interfere in China’s internal affairs and undermine China’s sovereignty, security and development interests.’

According to the 31 July directive, any movable, immovable and all other kinds of properties related to McGovern in China will be frozen.

McGovern, the leading Democrat on the House Committee on Rules, is a member of the Congressional-Executive Commission on China, which focuses on China’s human rights record.

The Congressman said he will ‘proudly wear this sanction as a badge of honor,’ and that if leaders in China ‘don’t like it when people speak out against their horrific human rights record, maybe they should improve their horrific human rights record.’
