ECCAS lifts Gabon sanctions
The Economic Community of Central African States (‘ECCAS’) has lifted sanctions against Gabon, imposed last August following a coup that ousted President Ali Bongo. The decision was made by the 11-member bloc at a 9 March meeting in Equatorial Guinea, Burundi’s Foreign Minister Albert Shingiro said on X, formerly Twitter.
‘Among the key decisions of the session is the lifting of sanctions against Gabon,’ Shingiro tweeted, although there was no formal statement by the bloc.
ECCAS suspended Gabon’s membership shortly after the 30 August coup, banning it from taking part in all related activities and warning the measures would remain until constitutional order is restored. In November the junta that ousted Bongo said it aimed to hold elections in August 2025.
