EU designates Hamas leader in Gaza for 7 October attacks
The EU Council has designated Yahia Sinouar, the leader of Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza, as a ‘terrorist’. Announcing the designation, the EU said, ‘This decision comes as part of European Union’s response to the threat posed by Hamas and its brutal and indiscriminate terrorist attacks in Israel on 7 October 2023.’
The Council said, 16 January, it had added ‘one individual to the EU terrorist list’, adding, ‘Following his listing, Yahia Sinouar is subject to the freezing of his funds and other financial assets in EU member states. It is also prohibited for EU operators to make funds and economic resources available to him.’
In December, the EU added Mohammed Deif, commander of Hamas’ military wing, and Marwan Issa, its deputy commander, to the list.
