EU extends restrictive measures against six officials and one entity in Nicaragua
The European Union (‘EU’) has extended restrictive measures against six Nicaraguan officials and one entity – including the country’s first lady and vice president – deemed responsible for serious human rights violations, repression of civil society and election-related violations until 15 October 2024.
In its 9 October decision, the EU Council said it was extending restrictive measures on the following persons and entity:
- Rosario María Murillo Zambrana: Vice President and First Lady of Nicaragua and a leader of the Sandinista Youth.
- Gustavo Eduardo Porras Cortés: President of the National Assembly of Nicaragua since January 2017 and member of the national direction of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) since 1996.
- Fidel De Jesús Domínguez Álvarez: Chief of police in Leon since 23 August 2018 then General Commissioner of the National Police since September 2020.
- Brenda Isabel Rocha Chacón: Since May 2021, President of the Supreme Electoral Council (SEC) – a body responsible for the preparation, holding and certification of the general elections.
- Cairo Melvin Amador Arrieta: Since May 2021, Vice-President of the SEC.
- Lumberto Ignacio Campbell Hooker: Since 2014, a member of the SEC.
- The Nicaraguan Institute of Telecommunications and Postal Services.
