Five-nation nuclear pact to ‘leave Russia out in the cold’
The United States and United Kingdom are partnering with three other countries to lock Russia out of the nuclear energy market, adding to the squeeze on President Vladimir Putin after Germany said it wants the civilian nuclear sector included in the next round of European Union sanctions on Moscow.
The UK government said, ‘An alliance between the UK, US, Canada, Japan and France, aimed at displacing Putin from the international nuclear energy market,’ was formed on the side-lines of the G7 meeting in Japan, 18 April.
‘This agreement will be used as the basis for pushing Putin out of the nuclear fuel market entirely, and doing so as quickly as possible, to cut off another means for him to fund his barbaric attack on Ukraine and fundamentally leave Russia out in the cold,’ it added.
