UK’s ECJU issues guidance over changes to the export of firearms

The UK’s Export Control Joint Unit (ECJU’) has issued guidance over changes to controls on firearms, which now cover devices capable of being converted into firearms. The Export Control (Amendment) (No 2) Order 2018 (SI 2018 No 939), which came into force on 14 September, amends the Export Control Order 2008 to align UK legislation with EU Directive 2017/853 concerning the acquisition and possession of weapons.

Schedules 1, 2 and 3 to the 2008 Order have been updated, as well as the consolidated control list of strategic military and dual-use items which require export authorisation, to reflect the current EU Common Military List and international obligations on firearms. The guidance also details the steps exporters should take when assessing ‘which legislation and controls apply to their exports’ when exporting to the EU or non-EU countries.
